Yesterday I was able to marvel at the wildlife! For the past two days, there has been a large seal resting about 30 feet off the ice runway road. I drove by it about 12 times today. Each time I let people out to take pictures, he would raise his head and turn toward the camera. Of course, when I took the opportunity to jump out, he faced the opposite direction, or layed flat in the snow. My last run of the night, I picked up two cargo people from the Ice Runway and proceeded to bring them back to the Station for dinner when the seal decided he would find a hole in the ice. He crossed the road right in front of my van! I’ve never had to stop for a seal in the road before! I have a great video of him moving across, but it’s too big to load down here, but here is a picture of him (being lazy before, and scooting along in front of me this last evening).

I’ve also talked about the “transition” a lot. Well, in actuality, I have two transitions to talk about. The first is the transition from a day schedule to a night schedule. That one is over. I will be transitioning back to a day schedule around Thanksgiving. The second transition is the place where the sea ice meets Ross Island. I have to drive over it every day when I drive to the airfield, or when I have passengers going to many places “out-of-town.” Right now, the transition we cross over the most has three major cracks in it that our Fleet Operations take care of every day by filling and packing them with snow. One of the cracks is shown below.
Lastly, I have been asked about my pictures. If you want to use any of them for your classroom students, or to illustrate something feel free. If you would like a larger file, I can also send those along to you if you request it. Eventually, I'll be posting a grand number of pictures online, but until then, I hope what I've put up so far gives you an idea of what life is like down here!
